General Worker – Water and Sanitation

Location: City of Ekurhuleni
Remuneration: R171,972.00 – R235,896.00 per annum (basic salary, plus benefits)

The municipality is currently seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to join the Water and Sanitation Department as General Workers. Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: At least Grade 10 (or equivalent qualification).
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar environment, preferably in construction, maintenance, or public works.
  • Physical Ability: Must be physically fit and capable of performing demanding manual labour in different weather conditions.
  • Other Skills: Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and workplace safety standards will be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

As a General Worker in the Water and Sanitation Department, you will play a vital role in supporting maintenance and repair projects across the municipality. Your core duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintenance and Repairs: Assist with maintenance, repair work, and installation of new water and sewer networks.
  • Excavation: Perform digging and trenching using tools such as picks, shovels, or other suitable equipment as instructed by supervisors.
  • Pipe Installation: Prepare trenches and bedding surfaces for the laying of reticulation pipes to ensure proper alignment and stability.
  • Backfilling and Compaction: After pipe installation, perform backfilling and compact soil using shovels, compactors, or similar tools.
  • Sewer Maintenance: Enter sewer pump stations to remove blockages, rags, or foreign objects and assist with cleaning to maintain smooth operations.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all occupational health and safety standards at all times to prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental hazards.
  • General Handyman Work: Carry out routine maintenance tasks, minor construction activities, and other manual duties as required.
  • Equipment Handling: Safely operate and maintain mechanical equipment, tools, and other work-related resources.
  • Worksite Cleanliness: Ensure that the worksite, ablution facilities, and offices are cleaned and restored after tasks are completed.
  • Legislative Compliance: Adhere to all relevant legislation, municipal by-laws, and organisational policies and procedures.
