Main Purpose of the Job
The successful candidate will be responsible for attending to emergency calls and providing intermediate-level medical care in line with the prescribed scope of practice. You will play a vital role in stabilizing patients, administering pre-hospital treatment, and ensuring safe transportation to appropriate healthcare facilities. The position requires quick thinking, technical expertise, and the ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
As part of ER24’s operational team, you will be expected to deliver clinical excellence and uphold our standards of professionalism at all times. You will also contribute to maintaining a positive public image for ER24 through quality service, empathy, and community engagement.
Key Responsibility Areas
The position involves a combination of operational readiness, clinical responsibility, and customer service excellence. Key duties include:
- Ensure Operational Readiness for Emergency Calls
- Conduct daily equipment, vehicle, and medication checks to ensure full operational readiness.
- Respond promptly and efficiently to emergency calls as dispatched by the control centre.
- Maintain compliance with safety, hygiene, and infection control standards.
- Prepare all relevant documentation before, during, and after emergency responses.
- Administer Patient Care in Line with Scope of Practice
- Assess, manage, and treat patients according to the HPCSA Clinical Practice Guidelines for Intermediate Life Support (ILS).
- Apply advanced life support interventions when required and within legal limits of practice.
- Record patient information accurately on Patient Report Forms (PRFs) and ensure data integrity.
- Provide compassionate support and reassurance to patients and family members during emergencies.
- Ensure continuity of care when transferring patients to hospitals or other healthcare professionals.
- Promote and Maintain a Positive Public Image for ER24
- Represent ER24 professionally and courteously in all public interactions.
- Build strong relationships with community stakeholders, healthcare providers, and patients.
- Assist in marketing initiatives and health awareness campaigns where required.
- Uphold the organization’s reputation for reliability, compassion, and clinical excellence.
Required Education
- Essential Qualification:
- Ambulance Emergency Assistant Certificate or
- Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care from a recognized institution.
- Desired Education:
- Successful completion of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) training as published by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) will be advantageous.
- If you are not compliant with the most current HPCSA CPG requirements at the time of application, you will be required to complete this training during your probation period upon appointment.
Required Experience
- Essential Minimum Experience: At least 1 year of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) experience.
- Desired Experience: 1 year of experience specifically at the Intermediate Life Support (ILS) level is advantageous.
Required Job Skills and Knowledge

- A thorough understanding and application of best medical practice standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer literacy for data recording and reporting.
- Strong knowledge of local facilities, travel routes, and geographical areas relevant to emergency response.
- Familiarity with HPCSA guidelines, scope of practice, and relevant legislation.
- Competence in completing Patient Report Forms (PRFs) accurately and efficiently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proficiency in English (both written and verbal).
- The ability to function effectively as part of a high-performing team and to make sound clinical judgments under pressure.
