Introduction
Johannesburg Pikitup (SOC) Limited, the official waste management service provider to the City of Johannesburg, is proud to announce an exciting opportunity for students and recent graduates who are seeking workplace exposure through the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme. This initiative is part of Pikitup’s ongoing commitment to youth development, education, and empowerment within the city of Johannesburg.
As an organisation deeply rooted in service excellence and community upliftment, Pikitup recognises the importance of equipping young South Africans with the practical experience required to transition smoothly from academic study to meaningful employment. Through the WIL Programme, the company aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the realities of the professional world, creating a pathway for students to gain hands-on exposure in a real working environment.
Purpose of the Programme
The primary goal of the Pikitup Work Integrated Learning Programme is to support students who require workplace-based experience in order to complete their academic qualifications or meet post-graduation experiential training requirements. Many tertiary institutions now mandate practical experience as part of their curriculum, and Pikitup is stepping forward to meet this growing need by offering opportunities across multiple disciplines.
This programme will allow students to apply the concepts and theories they have studied in class to actual work scenarios, while simultaneously developing professional skills, work ethics, and industry-specific knowledge. It also enables Pikitup to nurture young talent, support transformation, and build a pipeline of future professionals who can contribute meaningfully to Johannesburg’s environmental sustainability and waste management goals.
Who Can Apply?
To be considered for inclusion in the Pikitup WIL database, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Must be unemployed at the time of application.
- Must be 35 years of age or younger.
- Must be a resident of the City of Johannesburg.
- Must not have participated in any similar internship, learnership, or WIL programme previously.
Preference will be given to candidates who are passionate about learning, adaptable to dynamic environments, and eager to contribute to Johannesburg’s growth and cleanliness.
Programme Duration and Selection Process
The WIL programme is designed to run for a period not exceeding 18 months, depending on the requirements of the specific field of study and departmental needs. Students will be contacted and invited for interviews as and when opportunities become available within Pikitup’s various operational and administrative departments.
Successful candidates will be placed in suitable divisions according to their area of study and the company’s capacity to host them. During their placement, participants will gain valuable exposure, mentorship, and training from experienced professionals while contributing to real projects that make a difference in the community.
