JOB OVERVIEW
The primary responsibility of a Tug Driver is to operate specialised towing vehicles that push, pull, and transport aircraft and operational equipment across the airport. Tug Drivers ensure that aircraft are moved safely between hangars, gates, taxiing zones, and other airside areas. This is a crucial role that requires high attention to detail, situational awareness, and strict compliance with safety protocols.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
If hired as a Tug Driver, your duties will include:
- Safely operating towing tugs and pushback tractors used to transport aircraft and heavy equipment.
- Performing pushback operations during aircraft departures.
- Towing aircraft to and from hangars, maintenance bays, terminals, and designated areas.
- Completing daily vehicle inspections and reporting any defects.
- Ensuring all equipment is operated in accordance with SAA’s safety procedures and regulatory standards.
- Communicating professionally with marshalling teams, ramp agents, engineers, and pilots.
- Following proper signalling, radio communication, and airport standard operating procedures.
- Maintaining accurate logs of all towing activities and records of equipment usage.
- Transporting baggage carts, cargo dollies, and GSE equipment as required.
- Adhering strictly to airside safety rules, including speed limits, visibility requirements, and hazard awareness.
This role requires physical stamina, alertness, and the ability to work under pressure, especially during busy flight schedules.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for the Tug Driver position, applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
- Valid Code 10 or Code 14 driver’s licence, with PDP being an added advantage.
- Minimum 1–2 years of driving experience in a heavy-duty vehicle environment.
- Previous experience in aviation, logistics, or ground handling will be a strong advantage.
- Ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions carefully.
- Strong understanding of safety principles and high-risk working environments.
- Ability to pass medical fitness tests, including hearing and vision assessments.
- Clear criminal record.
